Periplaneta americana (American Roach)

Periplaneta americana
(American Roach)

If you've ever seen the singing, dancing roaches from "Joe's Apartment", you'll recognize this species. Periplaneta americana (the American Roach) is one of the most well-known and widespread blattodeans in the world. You wouldn't be able to tell by the name, but these roaches actually hail from Africa! Although given a bad reputation as a pest species, these roaches are heavily reliant on moisture and can only establish a foothold in homes that have water issues.

Adult Size - Male (40 mm), Female (40 mm)

Climbing Ability - Adults and older nymphs can climb

Flying Ability - Adults can fly

Barrier/Secure Lid - Necessary

Substrate
P.americana aren't picky about their substrate as long as it holds moisture well.

Food
P.americana aren't picky about their food and can be fed an average roach diet.

P.americana can be kept into the high 60s, but grows and breeds fastest at warmer temperatures.

Range - 68 F to 85 F
