Eurycotis floridana (Florida Skunk Roach)

Eurycotis floridana
(Florida Skunk Roach)

"Big Torch Key, FL" locale

The Florida Skunk Roach is North America's largest native cockroach species. Nymphs have a red base color, often coupled with lighter streaks along the borders of the thorax. This coloration is more pronounced in some populations and occasionally even carries over into maturity. When frightened, adults produce an admittedly adorable hissing sound. If that doesn't scare you off, however, they'll emit a strong, amaretto-scented defensive spray, which...many actually find alluring. In fact, some of its properties are used in the production of perfumes!
